Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Your quarterly updates, from the app you already run the job in.

Manifold connects to HMRC, keeps your income and expenses as digital records and sends the quarterly update for your self-employment. No second subscription, no exporting a spreadsheet to somebody else’s software four times a year.

Early access. HMRC production approval is still in progress. Annual tax return filing is not available in Manifold yet.

What Manifold does for your tax.

  • Connect to HMRC once

You sign in at HMRC's own site and grant Manifold access. Nothing of your Government Gateway sign-in ever passes through us, and you can disconnect from the Tax tab at any time.

  • Your businesses and deadlines, from HMRC

Manifold reads your self-employment businesses and your obligation periods directly from HMRC, so the four quarterly deadlines you see are the ones HMRC is actually holding you to, not a calendar we guessed.

  • Digital records that satisfy the rules

Keep income and expenses as a digital ledger: add a transaction as you go, or import a CSV from your bank with a dry-run preview before anything is written.

  • Categorising you can correct

Transactions are sorted into HMRC's self-employment categories with a review queue for anything uncertain. Amount, date and direction are frozen once recorded. The category is yours to change.

  • Mileage without the receipts

Simplified expenses are worked out at HMRC's approved mileage rates, with the 10,000-mile tier handled properly, so a van-heavy year does not need a shoebox.

  • Send the quarterly update

When a period is ready, Manifold submits the cumulative totals to HMRC and stores what was sent. You see what went, when, and for which period.

What is not in it yet.

Manifold is being built in stages, and you should know what you are getting before you rely on it for a tax deadline.

  • Your annual tax return (the final declaration). Quarterly updates do not replace it. You need other compatible software or an accountant with compatible software to complete this step until Manifold supports it.
  • An in-app estimate of the tax you will owe. Your figures go to HMRC. The estimate comes back from HMRC's own calculation, and that is a later piece of work.
  • CIS deductions taken at source by contractors. It is next on the list because it matters to most subcontractors.
  • Income appearing in the ledger automatically from your Manifold invoices. Today you add it or import it.

Not sure whether any of this applies to you yet? The free MTD readiness checker tells you which April you are caught by, from your own figures. Read HMRC’s guide to how Making Tax Digital works for the quarterly and annual requirements.
