Baxi controls and Boiler Plus: what Baxi actually claims

What does Baxi say Boiler Plus requires?

A minimum efficiency, controls on every job, and one extra measure on combis. Baxi's own legislation page records that on 6 April 2018 changes to technical standards under Building Regulations Approved Document L1b, known as Boiler Plus, came into effect, and that they apply to installations in existing buildings in England only. The three main changes are a seasonal space heating efficiency for the new boiler of no less than ErP 92 percent, time and temperature control required for all installations, and combi installations also including one of weather compensation, load compensation, flue gas heat recovery, or smart control with automation and optimisation. Baxi sets the background out as well: ErP arrived in September 2015 and took a more holistic view of system efficiency by recognising the impact of controls on the installed package, and the BEIS consultation that led to the change opened in December 2016.

Which Baxi controls carry a Boiler Plus claim?

Two of them, and neither claim is unconditional. The uSense 2 professional page lists Boiler Plus compliance as a benefit, worded as compliant when fitted to the new ranges, combi only. The In Flue Outdoor Sensor page describes it as an easy and cost effective way to comply with the requirements of Boiler Plus when combined with a timer and temperature control, which makes it the extra measure rather than the whole answer. The AmbiZen, the OpenTherm RF Thermostat (Single Channel) and the RF Thermostat (Twin Channel) carry no Boiler Plus wording on their current pages. That silence is not Baxi saying they fail, it means there is nothing published to lean on, so verify with Baxi rather than assuming from the spec.

How does the IFOS take the weather compensation route?

It clips into the flue instead of going on an outside wall. Baxi describes the In Flue Outdoor Sensor as extremely simple to fit with no drilling, no disruption and no unsightly cables, with a free flow of air over the sensor for more accurate temperature sensing, and very few parts compared with many other weather sensors. The range includes a 5m extension and a Ridgetile. Baxi also notes it can provide additional SAP benefits on new build. The compatibility line on that page names Baxi Assure Combi and System boilers, so confirm the pairing against the appliance in front of you rather than treating it as a universal fit.

Why does OpenTherm or 230V change what the same thermostat does?

It decides which unit is in charge of the setpoint. Baxi's FAQs for the OpenTherm RF Thermostat (Single Channel) state that the boiler is master when the control is fitted via OpenTherm on Baxi Combi 2 boilers, that the control is master when fitted via OpenTherm on the Main Eco Compact, Baxi Platinum Compact and Duo-tec Compact, and that the boiler is master whenever the control is fitted via 230V. The same split reaches the outdoor sensor: Baxi says outdoor temperature can be viewed on the control when it is fitted via OpenTherm, but not when it is fitted via 230V. On which appliances can take an OpenTherm connection at all, Baxi lists all Baxi Combi 2 and Main Eco Compact Combi, plus Baxi Platinum Compact Combi and Duo-tec Compact Combi from January 2025 production onwards. That production date is worth checking on an older Compact before you promise the customer app control of flow temperature.

Where do the AmbiZen and the twin channel sit?

One is the smart option, the other is not a combi control at all. The AmbiZen runs on the My Baxi app, works with Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT, takes 7 day, 5/2 day or 24 hour heating and hot water schedules, tracks consumption, and Baxi states it monitors the weather and automatically adjusts to optimise comfort and efficiency. Flow temperature can be set from the app. Its compatibility footnote covers the Baxi Combi 2 ranges, the Amptec S electric range, the Baxi Pre-Plumbed Cylinder and the Baxi ASHP Control. The RF Thermostat (Twin Channel) is for Baxi system, heat only, ASHP and electric boilers, so the combi extra measure does not bite on it in the first place. Baxi confirms it is 230V only and not compatible with OpenTherm, that it does work with the IFOS, and that the heating curve in that pairing is set on the boiler itself. Its RF range to the receiver is up to 30m.

What to check before you quote

• The appliance, not the badge. Baxi splits control compatibility by range, and the Combi 2, Compact and Assure families do not all behave the same way.
• The connection. OpenTherm or 230V changes which unit is master and whether outdoor temperature reaches the display.
• Production date on Compact combis. Baxi puts OpenTherm on the Platinum Compact and Duo-tec Compact from January 2025 production onwards.
• Where the property is. Baxi frames Boiler Plus as applying to existing buildings in England only, and does not set out the devolved positions on that page.
• Warranty, which is not uniform. Baxi lists 2 years parts only on the uSense 2 against 5 years parts only on both RF thermostats.
