Where is the serial number on a Main boiler?

On the information label, which carries the model, the serial number and the Gas Council number together. Main puts that label somewhere a householder can read it without tools, and the exact spot changes with the range. The Eco Compact Combi and System manuals say it is on the front middle underside of the outercase and is accessed by swinging forward gently. The Eco Compact Heat manual moves it to the front left underside and says to pull it forward gently. On the Eco Elite Combi and Eco Elite System the model name and serial are shown on the information label on the back of the facia door instead. Behind that sits a second badge, the data badge proper, and the manuals are equally specific about where to find it. Main also asks that neither label is removed or covered, and that both stay legible throughout the lifetime of the boiler, so if one has been painted over on a rental changeover it is worth saying so on the record.

What is a GC number?

A GC number is the Gas Council number, a seven digit appliance reference written in the form 00-000-00 and printed on the data plate next to the model and the serial. It names the exact appliance variant rather than the range badge on the front of the case, which is why Main prints one per output on the first page of every installation manual. Across the Main range two families run through the numbers: a combi carries a 47 number, and a system or heat only model carries a 41 number. That is a quick sanity check on a badge you have only half read, and it is why the Eco Compact name splits into 47-467-14 on the 25 combi and 41-467-40 on the 15 heat only.

Where is the data plate on each Main boiler range?

It moves by range, so read the table before you take a single panel off. Every row below comes from Main's own installation and service manual for that model, or from the user guide where that is where the wording sits. The pattern holds even as the words change: the data badge lives behind the case front, and a second label carrying the same numbers sits somewhere you can reach with the case still on.

What are the GC numbers for the current Main ranges?

Every output has its own, printed on the first page of the installation manual under the model name. The rows below are the three ranges Main still sells, read from its own manuals. Look at the 15 and 18 rows and the point makes itself: the same two outputs appear in the Eco Compact System and the Eco Compact Heat with completely different appliance numbers, so the output on the badge is not enough to order parts against.

The discontinued ranges are still on plenty of walls, and their manuals are still published, so the numbers below come from the same place. Watch the two 24 HE rows. A Combi 24 HE is 47-474-02 and a Main 24 HE is 41-474-05, and nothing but the word Combi on the case separates them by name.

Anything not listed here comes off the data plate rather than off a guess. Where the plate has faded, the installation manual for that model is the dependable route, because Main prints the number on the front page under the model name.

How do I register a Main boiler guarantee?

Through Baxi, within 30 days of installation. Main is a trading division of Baxi Heating UK, and the Main Heating website now says it has transitioned into Baxi, with the boiler and cylinder information moved to baxi.co.uk. Main's user guides have pointed registration at baxi.co.uk/registration for years, and the current product pages carry the same route: a five year parts and labour warranty, subject to registration on warranty.baxi.co.uk or Baxi Works. Main's own three conditions are printed in the front of the user guide, and all three have to hold. The Benchmark checklist completed by the installer, the warranty registered within 30 days, and an annual service. Miss them and the Baxi Customer Support warranty terms limit the cover to 12 months from the date of installation as recorded on the Benchmark commissioning checklist.

How do I check whether a Main boiler is registered?

Through the same portal at warranty.baxi.co.uk, with the serial number in front of you. One trap is worth knowing before you try. The portal's own FAQ asks you to enter the serial number and leave out the security code shown alongside it on the registration page, and that is a common reason a lookup comes back empty. If nothing shows and the boiler was fitted well over 30 days ago, the likely answer is simply that nobody registered it. Baxi Customer Support is the place to confirm what cover survives, on 0344 871 1545, and that number is printed in Main's own user guides.

How old is a Main boiler?

There is no honest way to read a build date out of a Main serial on site. Main publishes no digit by digit decode, and neither does Baxi, whose age guidance says only that the serial number has all the information needed for them to tell you when the boiler was manufactured. Record the serial exactly as found and ring Baxi Customer Support if the age is going to decide a warranty claim or a replacement quote.

• What the serial will get you: a manufacture date, but only once Baxi reads it for you.
• What you cannot do with it yourself: work a date out of the digits, because no public decode exists for the Main range.
• A second route to an approximate age: Baxi's age guidance points at the industry product database at ncm-pcdb.org.uk, which returns the years a model was in production rather than the age of the boiler in front of you.
• A rough decade check from the range itself: the Main HE literature is dated 2009, the Combi HE books 2009 and 2011, the HE A range 2013, the Eco Elite Combi 2015 and the Eco Elite System 2017, and the current Eco Compact books 2023.
• A firmer date than anything on the case: if the boiler was registered, the registration record carries the installation date.

What to copy onto the record

• Make and model as written on the data plate, not as described by the customer.
• GC number in full, including the dashes, so the appliance variant is unambiguous.
• Serial number from the information label or the data badge, which is also what a registration or a guarantee check needs.
• Gas category and connection pressure, so the appliance can be checked against the supply on site.
• Anything that does not match the Benchmark book or the previous record, noted as found, including a label that has been painted over or removed.
