The quiet summer weeks are the best time to do the jobs that never fit in winter. Chase the invoices you're still owed, tidy your customer and property records, pre-book autumn services while diaries are open, and review your day rate before the busy season. A few hours now buys a calmer October.
Unpaid invoices are easy to let slide when you're flat out, and summer is when you finally have time to go after them. Money owed to you is an interest-free loan you've given someone else, so pull the list and work through it while you can.
Winter is no time to sort out a shoebox of job sheets. The quiet season is. Get your customers, properties, appliances and certificates in order now, so that when the autumn renewals land, the history you need is a search away, not a rummage.
The autumn rush is completely predictable, which is exactly why you can get ahead of it. A service booked in August isn't competing with a no-heat call-out in November, so use the summer outreach to fill your diary in the order that makes sense, not the order the phone happens to ring.
Services and landlord renewals both. That list is your warm outreach for the next two months.
A boiler serviced before the cold snap is far less likely to leave a customer without heat in December, and they know it.
Group nearby jobs into fewer trips. For landlord checks, the two-month early window lets you bring a renewal forward without moving its annual date.
By mid-year the new tax year has settled and you know what your costs actually are. A small, well-signposted price rise is far easier to make in the quiet season than in the thick of winter, so check your day rate still covers your costs and the margin you're aiming for, and give customers fair notice.
Marketing is the first thing to fall off the list when you're busy, so summer is the time to actually do it. An hour spent on your reputation now feeds the enquiries that carry you through next spring.
The engineers who don't dread October are the ones who spend the summer working on the business, not just in it. None of the above is urgent, which is exactly why it never gets done in season. Do it now.
