Vaillant servicing: what keeps the guarantee valid

A Vaillant boiler guarantee only holds if the appliance is serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer and the service is written into the Benchmark logbook. Vaillant also requires the boiler to be registered within 30 days of installation, and missing that window drops the cover back to twelve months.
How often does a Vaillant boiler need servicing?
Once a year, without a gap. Vaillant's domestic boiler guarantee terms state that the boiler must be serviced annually by a Vaillant or other Gas Safe registered engineer, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, and its installer-facing guidance repeats that the homeowner has to arrange an annual service to keep the guarantee valid. That applies across the current domestic range, from the ecoFIT pure at the value end through the ecoTEC plus to the ecoTEC exclusive. The cost of the service is not covered by the guarantee, so it is worth setting the customer's expectations at handover rather than in year two.
Who can service a Vaillant boiler under guarantee?
Vaillant's own engineer, or any other Gas Safe registered engineer working to the manufacturer's instructions. The service side is open, which is why plenty of independents look after Vaillant appliances that are still in guarantee. Repairs are narrower. Vaillant's terms say a guarantee repair has to be carried out by Vaillant or by a Vaillant authorised Gas Safe registered engineer, and that non-genuine spare parts in any repair invalidate the cover. Worth knowing before you fit a pattern part to something with eight years left on it.
How long is the guarantee on each Vaillant range?
It depends on the range and on who registered it. Vaillant publishes the current figures for installers, and the pattern is a modest standard term that grows when a myREWARDS installer registers the appliance, and grows again when a Vaillant filter is fitted at the same time.
- ecoTEC plus: five years as standard, up to eight when registered by a myREWARDS installer, ten with a Vaillant filter fitted.
- ecoTEC exclusive: the same ladder as the plus, five years standard rising to ten with a myREWARDS registration and a Vaillant filter.
- ecoFIT pure: two years as standard, seven when a myREWARDS installer registers it, ten with a Vaillant filter.
- ecoTEC pro: two years as standard and seven through a myREWARDS installer, with no filter uplift beyond that.
- The eight year tier on the ecoTEC ranges is limited to Renewable Partner and Platinum myREWARDS members. Silver and Gold members can offer up to seven.
What is the 30 day registration rule?
Register the appliance within 30 days of installing it or the guarantee falls back to twelve months from the installation date. Vaillant is explicit about the deadline, and it is the single most expensive detail to forget on an otherwise clean job. Registration needs the full 28 digit serial number, which Vaillant prints on the packaging, the appliance data plate, removable stickers on the top of the boiler and the back of the control box. Peel a sticker off before the packaging goes in the van and the number is with you when you sit down to register.
The start date matters as well. The guarantee runs from the date of installation, but Vaillant wants proof of purchase to validate that, either an invoice or a completed Benchmark logbook. Without one, cover is counted from the date of manufacture on the data plate, which can quietly cost the customer months.
What can invalidate a Vaillant guarantee?
A missed annual service, or a service with no Benchmark entry behind it. Vaillant requires the service details to be recorded in the logbook and the logbook to be available for inspection, so an undocumented service is close to no service at all when a claim is assessed. Beyond that, the terms name a handful of specifics.
- Installation and commissioning by anyone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer, or more than six months after the boiler left Vaillant's warehouse.
- Non-genuine Vaillant spare parts used in a repair.
- Moving the boiler to another property without Vaillant's written consent.
- Failures traced to contaminated system water, which make the visit chargeable rather than covered.
- Registration outside the 30 day window, which does not void the cover but cuts it to twelve months.
What should you record at every service?

Take it from the appliance rather than the customer's paperwork, since that number is what Vaillant's registration and guarantee records key off.
Complete the Benchmark service section
Vaillant requires service details in the logbook, and the logbook has to be available for inspection, so this is the part of the visit the guarantee actually rests on.
Log the date and your Gas Safe details
The record needs to show that a Gas Safe registered engineer did the work and when, because both are conditions of the cover.
Note any parts fitted
Genuine Vaillant parts only on anything still in guarantee, and record what went in, so nobody has to guess later.
Leave a copy on site and keep your own
The logbook stays with the boiler, but a second copy in your own records saves the hunt when a claim comes up years later.
