Vaillant system water quality: treatment, filters and the guarantee

Vaillant treats heating water as a warranty condition, not a courtesy. The installation instructions set a pH window, hardness guidelines and a top-up limit, and the extended guarantee adds a flush to BS7593, a Vaillant filter and an inhibitor check every two years. Miss those and a claim can be rejected.
What does Vaillant ask you to check before filling?
Look at the water, test it for magnetite, then test the pH. The ecoTEC plus installation and maintenance instructions tell you to draw a little water off the heating circuit and check its appearance. Sedimentary material means the installation needs desludging. Then hold a magnetic rod in the sample: if it picks up magnetite, Vaillant wants the installation cleaned and suitable corrosion inhibition applied, or a magnetite separator fitted. Finally, check the pH of that removed water at 25 degrees C.
What pH does Vaillant allow in the heating water?
Between 8.2 and 10.0, measured at 25 degrees C. The manual is direct about it. If the value sits below 8.2 or above 10.0, you clean the installation and treat the heating water. That range is Vaillant's own and it does not match every other manufacturer, so read the document that applies to the appliance in front of you rather than carrying a number over from another make.
When does the water have to be treated?
In three cases, and any one of them is enough. Vaillant says the heating water must be treated if the entire filling and supplementary water quantity across the operating life of the system exceeds three times the nominal volume of the heating installation, or if the pH falls outside 8.2 to 10.0, or if the published hardness guidelines are not met. That first one is the trap on an installation that has been topped up for years, because nobody has been counting.
What are the hardness guidelines?
They tighten as the system holds more water per kilowatt. For a total heating output under 50kW, Vaillant gives a guideline of under 300 ppm CaCO3 where the specific system volume is 20 litres per kW or less. Between 20 and 50 litres per kW the guideline drops to 200 ppm, and above 50 litres per kW it drops to 2 ppm, which in practice means treated or demineralised water. Specific system volume here is the nominal capacity in litres divided by the heating output.
Which additives does Vaillant list?
A named list, with a stated limit on what that listing means. Vaillant says no incompatibility with its products has been detected to date with proper use of the following, and adds that it accepts no liability for the compatibility of any additive or its effectiveness in the rest of the heating system. It also warns against unsuitable antifreeze, corrosion inhibitors, biocides and sealants, which can change components, cause noise in heating mode and lead to later damage.
- Cleaners, with a flush afterwards: Adey MC3+, Adey MC5, Fernox F3, Sentinel X300, Sentinel X400.
- Intended to stay in the system: Adey MC1+, Fernox F1, Fernox F2, Sentinel X100, Sentinel X200.
- Frost protection intended to stay in the system: Adey MC ZERO, Fernox Antifreeze Alphi 11, Sentinel X500.
- Where you have used any of them, Vaillant expects the end user to be told what that means for them.
Where does the Vaillant filter go, and which size?
On the heating return, sized by the boiler's heating output. The Boiler Protection Kit comes as a 22mm version, part 0020278309, for outputs of 14 to 27kW, and a 28mm version, part 0020278310, for 28 to 45kW. It separates particles from 5 microns upwards, needs no shut-off valves or bypass, and the arrow on the manifold has to match the return flow direction. The newer Advance Protection Kit is 22mm only and fits horizontally close to the bottom of the boiler, with a 12,000 gauss magnet, a brass body, a rotatable head that gives access to the dosing point underneath, and an isolation valve in the box. Because it uses an existing boiler isolation valve, the drain off when you clean it is shorter.
What does the extended guarantee require on water treatment?
A specific chain of evidence, all of it recorded. The Boiler Protection Kit terms are explicit that failing any of these steps means a claim will be rejected.
Fit the kit as instructed
A Vaillant boiler protection kit, part 0020278309 or 0020278310, installed in the heating pipework in line with the filter instructions enclosed in the pack.
Flush, cleanse and inhibit to BS7593
A suitable corrosion inhibitor must be introduced into the clean primary water system, as described in the manufacturer's instructions.
Prove the water is clean and in range
Confirm cleanliness with a turbidity tube and test the pH with the litmus kit supplied. On a new install, test before the inhibitor goes in.
Write the pH down
The result goes in the comments section of the Benchmark logbook, at commissioning and again at every yearly service.
Service annually, filter included
The appliance and the system are serviced every year, and Vaillant expects the filter maintenance to be carried out at the same visit.
Check the inhibitor every two years
The strength or effectiveness of the inhibitor and the resulting cleanliness of the system must be checked, acted on where needed, and noted in the logbook.
Register inside 30 days
You need the full 28 digit serial number of both the appliance and the protection kit. The boiler serial is on the data plate, the packaging and the removable stickers on top of the boiler and behind the control box.
Which Vaillant documents are current on this?
Not all of them, and it matters. Boiler reference
The water treatment record is the part that gets lost. A pH reading noted on a Benchmark page two years ago is no use to the engineer standing in front of the boiler today.
