Where is the data plate on a Worcester Bosch boiler?
On the appliance itself, most often on or behind the lower front casing, and on many Greenstar models on the right-hand side. Worcester prints the badge on the boiler rather than tucking it away in the paperwork, so the appliance is always the source of truth. The exact position moves between ranges and generations, so if it is not on the front, check the underside and the side panels, then confirm against that model's installation and servicing manual before you copy anything down. The badge is small and often behind the case, so a phone torch and a photo save you crouching twice.
What is the GC number and where do you find it?
The GC number is the appliance's Gas Council reference, the code that identifies the exact model on the record, and it is printed on the same data badge as the model name. It is the number that goes in the appliance details on a gas safety record, so read it straight off the plate rather than guessing it from the range name. Do not confuse it with the serial number: the GC number identifies the model, the serial identifies the individual unit. If the badge is faded or painted over, the manufacturer's technical line can confirm the GC number from the full serial.
How do you read the serial (FD) number and its age?
Worcester encodes the manufacture date inside the serial number, in the part it calls the FD number. On data badges made before July 2010, the FD digits are the 11th, 12th and 13th of the long serial number. On badges made after July 2010 the FD sits in a separate block on the plate. Either way the badge gives you the full serial, and Worcester's own FAQ explains how the FD maps to a year and month for each badge style. That date is worth having: it tells you the true age of the appliance regardless of what the customer remembers about the install.
Why does the data plate matter for the CP12?
Because the appliance details on a gas safety record should describe the actual unit on the wall, not a best guess. The make, model and GC number all come off the badge, and getting them right means the record matches the appliance if anyone checks it later, from a letting agent to the next engineer. It also makes the history usable: an accurate model and serial let you pull the right manual, order the right spares and see when the boiler was really made. A photo of the badge on the job is the cheapest way to avoid a wrong entry.
What to check before you record the appliance
- The front and lower casing first, then the right-hand side and underside if the badge is not obvious.
- The GC number for the appliance details, read off the badge rather than inferred from the range name.
- The serial (FD) number for the true manufacture date, using Worcester's badge-style rule.
- A clear photo of the whole badge, so the record can be checked against the appliance later.
- The manufacturer's manual for that model if the badge is missing, painted over or unreadable.
