Vaillant ecoFit pure vs ecoTEC plus vs exclusive: which suits which home

Vaillant's domestic gas range splits into three tiers. The ecoFit pure is the value option for straightforward swaps in smaller homes. What is the ecoFit pure best for?

Cost-conscious combi and system swaps in small to medium homes. The ecoFit pure is Vaillant's more affordable range, built to a cupboard-friendly size and sold as a combi in 25kW, 30kW and 35kW outputs, with system versions in lower outputs for homes running a cylinder. For a one-bathroom property with ordinary hot water demand, the 25kW or 30kW combi is usually enough, and it keeps the quote competitive against the budget ranges from other makes. What it gives up is the newer interface and connectivity of the ecoTEC family above it, so if the customer wants app control out of the box, look up the range.

Where does the ecoTEC plus fit?

Most homes, which is why it is the Vaillant that engineers fit most. The current ecoTEC plus is the remastered version of the core range, sold as combi and system, with combi outputs of 26kW, 32kW, 36kW and 40kW plus a 40kW storage combi, the 940, for heavier hot water demand. Vaillant kept the case dimensions, flue position and pipe connections of the outgoing models, so a like for like swap from an older 825 or 835 is deliberately painless. The remaster added IoniDETECT combustion monitoring, modulation down to about a tenth of full output, and app control through the myVAILLANT connect gateway.

The hot water numbers step up the range as you would expect, from roughly 12 litres a minute on the 826 to around 21 litres a minute on the 940 storage combi at a 30 degree rise. Most outputs also convert to LPG through the interface with no extra parts, the two 40kW models excepted. As always, confirm the exact figures for the unit in front of you from the manual and the data plate.

When do you reach for the ecoTEC exclusive?

When the customer wants the premium tier and will pay for it. The exclusive sits at the top of the ecoTEC family and carries Vaillant's Green iQ mark. It is Quiet Mark approved, has an integrated internet module for connectivity, and Vaillant states 85 per cent of it is recyclable at end of life. Output options have changed across generations of this range, so treat any list you find online with caution and read the exact model from the data plate or Vaillant's current line-up before you quote. Vaillant advertises guarantees of up to ten years on its higher ranges, tied to installer scheme membership and registration with a boiler protection kit, so check the current terms rather than promising a customer a number.

What to check before you quote

• The data plate: read the exact model and output from the appliance, not from the customer's paperwork or an old invoice.
• Hot water demand: bathrooms and simultaneous use decide between combi, system and the 940 storage combi.
• Model numbers: the last two digits usually give the output in kW, so an 826 is a 26kW combi. Confirm it on the plate.
• Guarantee conditions: scheme membership, protection kits and registration windows change, so check Vaillant's current terms.
• Siting: the ecoFit pure suits tight cupboards, while the 940 storage combi is much deeper and heavier than the standard combis.
